“Use active packaging wisely,” advised Komal Bhavsar during her presentation at FDD Conclave 2022. She explained how, if packaging is not taken care of, a product can over desiccate or over moisten. “Active packaging can effectively safeguard most formulations from the effects of moisture,” she stressed.
She then explained the differences between moisture content and water activity. Moisture content involves total amount of water molecules. It is quantitative, and not a driving force; whereas water activity is the reactiveness of those water molecules. It is qualitative and a driving force.
“Suppressing moisture in packaging is key to ensure efficacy of many drugs and medicines, but over-desiccation is also a problem. Accuflip from Cilicant is designed to regulate Equilibrium Relative Humidity (ERH) within a specific range to prevent overdesiccation and protect the potency of medications,” she concluded.
