A special round table session `Role, Opportunities and Challenges of Women in Indian Pharmaceutical and Food Industries’ was recently organised in Mumbai by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). Visiting US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret A Hamburg, participated in the event.
During the discussion, participants expressed the need to make the Indian pharmaceutical industry attractive for women. They also noted that encouraging women entrepreneurs was very necessary to increase the participation of women in the sector. As of now, women constitute only 8-15 per cent of the workforce employed in the Indian pharma industry.
The forum called for enhanced co-operation in areas of regulatory capacity building, training and education, guidance on meaningful collaboration among regulatory organisations and similarly among academic institutions.
