Pharma contributed 15 per cent of the total patents published in the top 10 DWPI categories in India

Clarivate Analytics, the former intellectual property and science business of Thomson Reuters, has unveiled its ‘India Innovation: Trends’ report analysing the patenting activity in India from 2013-2015. The report briefly touches upon the innovation landscape in Asia and takes a dive into key technology sectors of the country.

Pharmaceuticals, polymers and plastics, computing and telecommunications are the top four Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) categories under focus for the India priority patents published during 2013-15. Pharma contributed 15 per cent of the total patents published in the top 10 DWPI categories in India. Innovation in the pharma category is focussed mainly on drug combinations, anti-inflammatory drugs and natural products made of plant extracts. Indian headquartered pharma companies top the list of key assignees with India priority patents in the pharma sector.

While the number of patent publications in China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia has steadily increased, there has been a downward trend in patent publications in Japan and South Korea as reflected by the compounded-annual-growth-rate. As per the report, India has the highest growth of 26 per cent in terms of published patents amongst the analysed countries.

Speaking about the report, Arvind Pachhapur, South Asia Head, Clarivate Analytics, said, “India has become a preferred destination for multinational companies to power their R&D. India headquartered companies are also increasingly proactive in protecting their intellectual property. Several initiatives by the government aimed at promoting innovation and intellectual property promise to amplify this growth trend.”

The innovation scene in India is continuously evolving due to a number of initiatives taken by the government and increasing number of research and development centres being opened by multi-national corporations as well as India head-quartered corporations. Further, India has become a key player in the world in terms of exporting goods and services and this has made the Indian companies to realise the importance of protecting their inventions in various geographies.

Data in the report is compiled using Thomson Innovation, DWPI, Derwent Patent Citations Index (PCI) and Thomson Data Analyser.
