Pharmexcil invites suggestions on EU directive concerning herbal APIs

With an aim to improve exports in herbal APIs and nutraceuticals, Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has asked all its members to share their suggestions on the EU directive concerning the requirement for written confirmation for herbal APIs, issue of licences for nutraceuticals exports by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and other issues related to food supplements.

Pharmexcil has represented the issue and the Department of Commerce is exploring the possibility of an alternate certifying authority. Pharmexcil will present its reports to the Department of Commerce by June 25, 2013.

The meeting was attended by companies from across India, expressing their concerns for simplification/clarity in the procedural aspects for the development of exports of traditional medicines and nutraceuticals/ dietary supplements.

The meeting was attended by N Ramakrishnan, Deputy Secretary from Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India; SBS Reddy, Joint Director General of Foreign Trade; Chandrasekhar Rao, Deputy Drugs Controller, CDSCO, Government of India; Dr K P Srivasuki,Commissioner, Department of AYUSH, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Raghuveer Kini, Executive Director, Pharmexcil and Ranjit Puranik, Panel Chief, Herbal and AYUSH Panel for Pharmexcil were present at the meeting. Puranik moderated the session and interacted with member companies.

Kini said, “We have called for suggestions from our members and will be discussing these issues with the Department of Commerce. Pharmexcil has plans to take Puranik and three to four top exporters from the industry for the meeting with the Department of Commerce.”
