SAC ACCP organises 11th annual conference in Mumbai

South Asian College of Clinical Pharmacology, an affiliate of American College of Clinical Pharmacology (SAC ACCP), recently organised the 11th conference in Mumbai. The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Clinical Pharmacology contributing to Global health and policies. Two pre-conference workshops were also held at Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC) KEM Hospital in Mumbai. The conference was supported by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), UNICEF and DST. A workshop on ethics and risk minimisation was held in collaboration with Council for International Organisations of Medical Science at National Institute For Research In Reproductive Health (NIRRH) in Mumbai.

The workshop on ethics and risk minimisation had lectures delivered by Dr Roli Mathur, Scientist ‘E’ Division of Basic Medical Sciences , Indian Council of Medical Research Department of Health Research, New Delhi, Dr Lembit Rago, Secretary-General, Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), Geneva 2, Switzerland. The workshop on ‘Research ethics and risk minimisation’ had Nilima Kshirsagar, President, SAC ACCP, Smita Deshpande, Herve Le Louet, Head of Pharmacovigilance Federation and the Co-chair of the Pharmacoepidemiology, Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), as the lecturers.

The workshop on ‘Prescribing skills, training and Assessment’ was held at Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital. Speakers who took part in the workshop were Sujith Chandy, Professor at the Department of Pharmacology & Clinical Pharmacology and administrative head of Pharmacy Services at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Suparna Chatterjee, Professor, Dept of Pharmacology, Inst.of Postgraduate research, IPMER, Kolkata; Yashashri Shetty, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai; Robin Ferner – Honorary Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Birmingham; Dinesh Badyal – Professor & Head, Department of Pharmacology, CMC, Ludhiana; Dr Srivastava – Advisor Quality Improvement, NHSRC, Chetna Desai, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad.

The conference on ‘Clinical Pharmacology contribution to global health and policies’ was held at Nehru Centre, which was inaugurated by Dr GB Parulkar, Former Dean GSMC KEM Hospital, Mumbai, who was also the Chief Guest.

Dr Kshirsagar gave an outline of the conference SAC ACCP and the need for cooperation and collaboration.

Ashok DB Vaidya, Research Director, Research Director at Medical Research Centre, Kasturba Health Society, Mumbai, gave the key note address. Dr Vikram Arya, President Elect, ACCP, welcomed the initiatives by SAC ACCP.

Dr Nirmala Rege, President Elect, SAC ACCP thanked the participants, students and well-wishers. Oral paper and poster presentations were delivered by students which were judged.

The following senior researcher, teachers and leaders felicitated for their outstanding contribution. They are Ram Vishwakarma – Director, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, for spearheading phytopharma development in India, and Neena Valecha – Scientist ‘G’ and Director, National Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi, for outstanding malaria research impacting government policy.

The session on ‘Alternatives to animals’ was attended by Vegesna Radha – Chief Scientist, Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, India , Telangana. The session on ‘Repurposing of drug’ was attended by Rashmi Bharbhaiya – Co- founder and CEO and M.D, Advinus Therapeutics, New York, US. The session on antimicrobial resistance was attended by Sujith Chandy, Priscilla Rupali – Professor and Head, Department of Infectious diseases, CMC, Vellore, Philip Mathew – Consultant ReAct Aisa Pacific & Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health, PIMR&C, Thiruvalla.

The session on ‘registries’ was attended by Krishna Undela – Lecturer, Department of Pharmacy Practice , JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru, Harshad Devarbhavi – Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Bengaluru.

The session on ‘Government policies and guidelines to foster clinical research’ was attended by Gagandeep Kang – Executive Director, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, NCR Biotech Science Centre, Haryana, Dr Prasad Kulkarni – Medical Director, SERUM Institute of India, Pune, and Dr Mangesh Gadhari, Health Officer, UNICEF Mumbai, United Nations Children’s Fund.

The session on ‘Current advances in Government policies and guidelines to foster clinical research in India’ had YK Gupta – Professor and Head, Dept of Pharmacology, AIIMS, New Delhi, and Dr Gadhari.

Lalita Savardekar, Scientist ‘E’ and In-Charge, Women’s Health Clinic & Bone Health Clinic, Naigaum, National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (ICMR), Mumbai and Yashashri Shetty, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Seth G S Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai, presented three cases of clinical research with ethical challenges.

The valedictory speech was given by Dr Mredula Phadke, Sr Advisor, UNICEF, who was also the chief guest.
